The University of New Hampshire (UNH) beat out seven other finalists and is the largest NASA contract award in the university’s history. The contract was awarded through the Earth Venture program and will allow UNH to develop a sensor known as a Geostationary Littoral Imaging and Monitoring Radiometer (GLIMR), which will go on a satellite to take high-resolution images of coastal areas.

Those satellite images will help improve the way ocean health is monitored and help identify algae blooms, oil spills and other hazards to marine life. NASA says the information will mean economic benefits for fisheries, tourism and coastal recreation industries. The sensor will be used to study the Gulf of Mexico, portions of the southeastern United States coastline and the Amazon plume.

GLIMR is expected to launch between the 2026-27 timeframe.
